Artist of the day: Midnight Bowlers League

Rockabilly was huge on the local scene in '08, and Tampa's Midnight Bowlers League did their part.

Singer Tim Masters, drummer Mike Fluno, guitarist Nafa and bassist Scott “The Knyfe” Mattis (that's Masters and Mattis up above) serve up some old-school, ’50s- and ’60s-inspired greaser jams in the vein of Carl Perkins and Eddie Cochran.

"That would be all Tim," Nafa said. "He had the vision when he started this band (back in 1998 with Michael, myself, and a former bassist) that he wanted to stick completely in the traditional style, and though I was familiar with some of the music, he had to introduce me to quite a bit of the real obscure stuff."

To keep the sound true, Nafa said, Masters has re-worked vintage amps and mics to “make sure we keep the faith, so to speak, with staying traditional.”

Check 'em out Saturday at Skipper's Smokehouse with the Cadillac Bombers; the show is at 8 p.m. and tickets are $10. And click here to listen to a live mp3 of their track A Thousand Guitars.
