Artist of the day: Morningbell
The Gainesville group has been popular in Tampa Bay for several years now, thanks to a poppy alt-rock sound that calls to mind Wilco, the Flaming Lips or the Beatles. The lineup: Singer-guitarist Travis Atria, his brother Eric on bass, Eric’s wife Stacie on keys and Chris Hillman on drums.
In 2011, Morningbell released their fifth album, the slinky, soulful Basso Profundo, but they did it in a profoundly unique format: A limited run of USB cards that includes nine songs, a four-song bonus EP and a bunch of multimedia, including band member recipes. “I guess once you’ve released four albums, putting a new one out on an obsolete format just isn’t as exciting anymore,” Travis Atria said via e-mail. “We really did it for ourselves, to have something that felt new and different.”
The band is already hard at work on their sixth album, but you can catch them on Saturday at New World Brewery in Tampa. Tickets are $7. Click here.
