Artist of the day: MRENC

It was a good way to start our New Year: Central Flordia's MRENC, a signee of Tampa-based New Granada Records, dropping us a free mp3 of their song Everything Is So Great. It's a bitchin' blast of Strokes-meets-Wavves-meets-Yo La Tengo garage rock goodness.

MRENC is known for that sort of wickedly cool vibe: Trippy, bouncy, fun rock 'n' roll that sounds modern yet bygone, with a glaze of guitars, keys and sunshine. The group -- which is really just one guy, Eric Collins, formerly of the Dark Romantics -- can be a little inscrutable and mysterious, as evidenced by this Jan. 3 post on Tumblr

musically - i’m not interested in being a “professional artist” anymore. personally speaking, being concerned / having this as a goal has tainted my “art” & overall attitude of creating music. i’ve become extremely jaded. i became obsessed with music & made it the #1 idol in my life. don’t get me wrong, i love music, but for me, making it more than a simple, beautiful release of creativity ugly-ed it up.

Okay then. Look for MRENC to release a new album or EP on New Granada sometime in 2011. In the meantime, click here to download Everything Is So Great for a limited time.
