Artist of the day: Mute Speak
The EDM revolution has led to tons of new DJs around the world. But it's also spawned chillwave, loop-heavy, bedroom-pop artists like James Blake, Tycho and The Weeknd.
Gerard Sison fits into the latter category. The Safety Harbor 20-year-old, formerly of Oh, Clemency and Aria Novos, now produces indie/ambient music under the name Mute Speak. Tracks like Fleeting and Erased are slinky, moody and evocative.
"I feel like I've been able to explore different realms of music and develop my style more in Mute Speak," he said. "Overall, I'm going for a more minimalist, downtempo sound."
Sison also cites Radiohead as an influence, and because this is #radioheadmonth, we couldn't help but ask what he digs about the lads from Oxford. "I just enjoy the fact that they're always inventive in their music and always doing something new. I also agree with their philosophy about the industry and how they approach the DIY perspective. I'm a big OK Computer fan and love the new record. Separator off King of Limbs is such a simple, chill song."
On Friday, Mute Speak will perform alongside Infinite Third, The Music Box and Kersey Williams at Undergrounds Coffee House, 212 Tarpon Ave. E, Tarpon Springs. The show is free. Click here for details.
