Artist of the day: Nate Najar

A few months ago, Latin jazz guitarist Nate Najar released Until Now, his acclaimed fourth CD. Already a fixture on the local scene thanks to appearances at events like the Clearwater Jazz Holiday (above), the disc might give him a national profile, too.

On the disc, Najar blends bossa nova with soulful grooves (Until Now) and funky rhythms (Holding Pattern), with even a little blues (Sunday Serenade, Rising Moon) thrown in for good measure. And if smooth jazz isn't your thing, you can always check out his instrumental version of Michael Jackson's Human Nature.

This spring, Najar is leading a series of intimate benefit performances at the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. That's where he'll be at 6 p.m. Friday, performing with celebrated drummer and vibraphonist Chuck Redd. Tickets are $15 for MFA members, $20 for non-members. Click here for details.
