Artist of the day: Nick McKaig

The video above is Nick McKaig's elaborate a cappella cover of the Star Wars theme, and it has more than a million YouTube views. It has caught the eye of E!, ABC News, the Daily Mail, Colombian radio. It has been viewed in Chad and Kazakhstan.

The Tampa native, 23, was singing in barbershop quartets at age 10, and can play cello and French horn and piano. At Plant High, he auditioned for the top choral group alongside seniors. The director was stunned. Nick had perfect pitch. Perfect.

After high school, he studied music at the University of Miami and the University of Southern California. He was surrounded by serious people who could dissect a 400-year-old piece of music but had limited appreciation for silly jokes and TV themes.

In January, after his cover of The Simpsons theme got attention from tech blog Gizmodo, he got dozens of new subscribers and mustered the courage to try Star Wars.

"It's just an epic song," said McKaig, who's now based in Tallahassee. "Either it's going to be a big hit or everyone's going to laugh at it."
