Artist of the day: Noctambulo
(All week on Soundcheck, we’re spotlighting the videos of Ryan Zarra, the director behind St. Pete Beat. His lush videos capture local performers in unusual venues, and also let their musicianship and personality shine through in unexpected ways. Today: Noctambulo.)
It is tough to pin down a description for the music of Noctambulo, a duo comprised of singer-songwriter Jun Bustamante and experimental noise artist/percussionist Alex “Stoic” Glueck. It is experimental, to be sure — swirling, evocative, tribal music that pulses with spirituality and cosmic energy. Like a spoken-word Animal Collective on mescaline, Noctambulo (Spanish for “night owl”) is a little bit hip-hop, a little bit PJ Harvey and alogether unlike any other act in Tampa Bay.
Their St. Pete Beat video captures the lush oddness of their live performances. Filmmakers caught up with Noctambulo at the Venture Compound, a bit-of-everything performane space in St. Pete. A more fitting venue, it is tough to imagine.
