Artist of the day: Nonchalant

What? They’re standing still?

Lakewood High junior Clifford Thomas, sophomore Shawn Cunningham and senior Ladarion Speights (who with Gibbs High student Christopher Smalls make up the band Nonchalant) are more commonly seen in the hallways executing their smooth dance moves.

The band won the Bay 2 Bay Area Idol Talent Search competition in December, splitting the $2,000 prize. They “gave my mother some money because she paid our way to enter the contest,” Ladarion said. “We also bought clothes and gas.”

The group has been dancing together since 2008, and they formed Nonchalant last February. They do all kinds of dances, and Shawn raps and sings. Ladarion has been dancing since he was 5 years old. “It eases my stress,” he said.
