Artist of the day: Ovid's Withering
Tampa death metal is alive and well thanks to groups like Ovid's Withering. See them live if for no reason other than drummer Connor Reibling, who launches an all-out assault on his kit during live shows, whipping crowds into a head-banging, hair-whipping frenzy.
The group -- Reibling, vocalist Andrew Zink, guitarists Eric Owen and Aaron Rodriguez and bassist Matt Suits -- describe themselves as "theatrical tech metal," which sounds about right. We happened to catch them at Pegasus Lounge a couple of years ago, and the robes, face paint and White Zombie-meets-Dimmu Borgir aesthetic really left an impression. But the music they've posted online is not only wickedly heavy, it's thoughtful, complex, inventive and evocative. Listen to their track Oedipus Complex, and you'll agree.
At 7 p.m. Saturday, you can catch Ovid's Withering opening for Catalysis, along with Burning Fair Verona, Slay The Serpent and Worse Things Waiting at the Local 662 in St. Petersburg. Perfect for Halloween! Tickets are $8. Click here.
