Barbershop? That ain't been popular since aught six, dagnabbit!

Oh, how wrong you are. Founded in 1980, the Palm Harbor Crystal-Aires still rehearse weekly and perform regularly at retirement communities and civic gatherings around Tampa Bay. Some members have been singing barbershop for decades. The resulting sound is smooth and soothing.

"It's a unique and challenging way to sing," said Fritz Weizel, 83, who grew up in a musical family in Pittsburgh. "You hear the pitch pipe and then you're on your own with no accompaniment."

Interested in joining the Crystal-Aires? Rehearsals are at 6:45 p.m. Monday evenings at the Palm Harbor Community Activity Center. For information, call Wes Branch at (727) 784-8052 or Norm Gordon at (727) 738-2704.

(Note: Due to a scheduling mishap, we have two Artists of the Day today -- the Palm Harbor Crystal-Aires and Infinite Groove Orchestra -- and none Wednesday. Sorry!)
