Artist of the day: Particle Effect
Tampa's Particle Effect -- Christian Rivas (vocals, bass, keys), Javier Leon (guitars) and Bill Parsons (drums) -- dish out a futuristic fusion of classic rock, electronic synths and rhythms and complex prog-rock progressions.
But don't let the word "prog" scare you. The band's sound is more accessible than you might think, thanks in part to a broad range of influences -- everyone from Rush and Tool to Coldplay and Santana. "You could even throw in The Cure and Joy Division for good measure," Rivas said.
The band has been playing together for the better part of two years, and all have jobs and families. But they're staying hungry about their music. In the coming weeks, the band is "fighting for time for pretty much everything," Rivas said, including gigs at festivals and beyond. "It's been a race for time even developing our own image, but we're doing this as fast as we can because we are truly passionate about our music."
Check out the band's heady sonic stew on Saturday when they perform with Poundsalt, Grex, Derek Jive and more. The show starts at 9:30 p.m. at the Pegasus Lounge, 10008 N 30th St., Tampa. Tickets are $5-$7. And after that, they'll play Aug. 14 at the Market on 7th in Ybor City.
