Artist of the day: Pielos

The name Pielos is a portmanteu of Pietri and Carlos -- as in guitarist Philip Pietri and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Carlos Andujar (of When Tides Collide), the originators of the group.

Along with bassist/keyboardist Josh Price and drummer Bryan Duffy, Pielos has gone from a rock-based sound to a more experimental, "texture-based, found-sound" collective. Each member has an equal say in the direction of the music, Andujar said.

"I'd say about 99.9 percent of our material is improvised, both on recording and in the live setting," said Andujar, although he noted that the band is also exploring new ways to construct and record songs in a group setting. "It's a fine line that we walk, but we rely on it and view it in the same light as jazz artists might concerning improvisation. It's exciting and terrifying all at once."
