Artist of the day: Raphael John

For a guy with a weekly DJ residency, Raphael John has some quirky tastes.

“Once in a while I’ll play songs that everyone would be embarrassed to sing yet know all the words to it, like Hanson, Mmmbop, or Chumbawamba, Tubthumping, but once they see and hear everyone else belting out the chorus, they’re quick to join in,” he says. “I’m not a conventional DJ and that’s the style that helps me stand out and get noticed.”

John, a.k.a. Raphael Matawaran, has spun at clubs like AJA Chanelside, the Kennedy, the Venue and Vintage Ultra Lounge. These days, you can find him at the Acropolis in St. Petersburg on Tuesday nights, spinning live mashups, ‘80s and house remixes of popular hip-hop singles and a few old-school classics.

You may also have spotted him at DJ battles around town. He’ll be participating in one at 10 p.m. Friday at Whiskey Joe’s, 7720 W Courtney Campbell Causeway, Tampa, with guest judges including DJ Short-e and DJ Mingle Mixx from Big Brother. Click here for details.
