(This week, in honor of this weekend's St. Pete Pride festival and next week's GaYbor Days, we're spotlighting some of the local scene's best GLBT musicians. Today: former Artist of the Day Someday Souvenir.)

Once upon a time, in 2002, there was A Girl Named Noah, an energetic female-led cover band that acquired a following with non-straight audiences. It enjoyed a good two-year run but sought a more substantive challenge.

So in 2004, they dropped the quirky-cute name and formed Someday Souvenir, an all-original act that busts out a pastiche of driving rock, introspective lyrics and poptacular hooks.

Founding members Dari Mahnic, vocals; Christine DeRado, lead guitar; and Stephanie Wood, rhythm guitar ‚Äì who are of varying sexual orientations (they declined to share specifics) ‚Äì are firming up their lineup. But they have a selection of tunes recorded and a few more to appear on the band‚Äôs forthcoming debut CD, Shade of Gray.

It's not so often you come across a local band with its ducks so happily in a row, from high-quality videos of their performances on YouTube to label-ready mp3s on their MySpace page.

This spring, the band opened for Fleetwood Mac at the St. Pete Times Forum and made the Top 5 of the Dinah Idol band contest at the national lesbian gathering known as Dinah Shore Weekend.

The women have stayed involved with their non-hetero brothers and sisters through their music, through performances at St. Pete Pride, TwirlGirl, Phish Phest in Orlando and the former Chiq Bar.

"The entire band is passionate about human rights and strongly believes in the dignity and equality of all people," Mahnic says. "We have a very diverse fan base with a large percentage coming from the GLBT communities."

This Saturday, the band will be playing on the main stage at Pride at noon, and then again at 9 p.m. at Gemini Lounge, 2315 Central Ave., St. Pete.
