Artist of the day: Richey Concert Band
Back in 2010, more than 750 people piled into New Port Richey’s Center for the Arts for a performance by the Richey Concert Band. Nothing unusual about that, since the community band has been a mainstay in Pasco County since the mid-’60s.
Except for one fact: This was Super Bowl Sunday.
That’s the draw of the Richey Concert Band, which features some 70 to 85 musicians of all ages performing a variety of styles.
“This an essential part of the community because it gives people a chance to play, of course, but then others have the opportunity to get out and see us,” said longtime band director Henry Fletcher, above. “We typically have about 800 to 900 people coming to our concerts.”
Rehearsals for the fall season start Sept. 4, with the band’s first show, a 9/11 tribute concert, on Sept. 11 at Sims Park in New Port Richey. The Richey Concert Band was part of Michele Miller’s recent feature story about community orchestras in Tampa Bay; click here to read it.
