Does Kickstarter work? Just ask Rise of Saturn.

Last year, the North Pinellas ska-rock group asked for $5,000 on the fundraising website to help record their new album, Sex, Drugs and Comic Books. They got $5,047. Eighty-nine supporters will get some form of swag from the group as a thank-you, ranging from a digital download of the album ($3) to this amazing $500 package:

Rise of Saturn will reenact your favorite scene from a movie or play, record it and share it with the world. Also, Rise of Saturn will pledge 10 hours of community service to the charity organization of your choice (within 100 miles of Tampa Bay) and video tape it. We will mail you a signed DVD copy of both these videos and upload them to YouTube. Of course, full props will be given to you. Plus, you will be able to sit on stage during the CD release show.

It's a fun prize, which fits the fun-loving band and its fun new album. "The album is a loose concept album, chronicling the exiling of a rebellious group of musicians from Earth that were banished by a worldwide dictator who outlawed anything that has to do with sex, drugs or comic books," said singer-bassist Ivan Pena. "This was meant to be a fun and energetic album. We made this without any preconceptions or expectations. We all believe this is the best f---ing album ever made."

Rise of Saturn -- which also features Brad Gilmore on vocals and trumpet; Dan “Disqo” Cano on percussion, sax and vocals; Eric Douthirt on guitar; and Paul “Pablo Honeycut” Liparoto on drums -- will celebrate Sex, Drugs and Comic Books with a CD release show at 8 p.m. Saturday at Gasoline Alley in Largo. Also on the bill are Beardsley, Escape Tonight and The Best Day Ever. Admission is $5-$7 ... or free if you're one of those Kickstarter donors who kicked in at least $10. (See? This is why you should support Kickstarter projects!) Click here for details on the show.
