Artist of the day: Ronnie Dee

Ron Dinicola, a.k.a. Ronnie Dee, has his fingers and saxophone in a mess of projects, from the Swingin’ Mooks to the Greg Billings Band, with whom he rocked the house during Jannus Live's first concert on Thursday. He also recorded with a studio alt-pop band called Sugarwall before two members decided to relocate.

Musically, this places him all over the map, from funk to swing to classic rock to FM pop. But he’s happy to keep his feet in Tampa Bay.

“I am, and will always be, a local,” said Dee, who's the son of Joey Dee, the '60s pop singer best known for the hit Peppermint Twist. “Proud to be here. Sure beats my old neighborhood, NYC.”

On Friday (4/2), Ronnie Dee's latest project, the Born in the USA Band, will perform a tribute concert at Clearwater's Capitol Theatre. to Bruce Springsteen in honor of the 25th anniversary of the album Born in the USA. Dee will be joined by artists like his dad, plus Tommy Mara from the Crests and Greg Billings. Expect songs from all points in Bruce's career.

"We are going to pay homage to Bruce's songs," Ronnie Dee said, "not imitate him."

The show is Friday at the Captiol Theatre, 405 Cleveland St., Clearwater. Tickets are $25-$45. Click here to purchase.
