Artist of the day: The Same
If you’ve been following the local music scene for the past decade, you may see The Same as something of a local supergroup.
The indie-garage-punk group started with three members, all high school friends, in 2003. They released a full-length CD, Tic-Tac-Toe, in 2004, and managed to tour the East Coast and some of the midwest. But in January 2008, after a handful of lineup changes, The Same played their final show.
Why? Well, considering how many other projects the members had going on, it was probably inevitable. Singer-guitarist Ryan Metcalf had achieved some national renown with Tres Bien and later played with Automatic Loveletter. Bassist Brian Schanck and drummer Chase Leonard were in Win Win Winter, and Leonard helped form Easybreezy. At one point, Damon Harper, who also played in Tres Bien (as well as Hasting and Sleeping Alone), replaced Leonard on drums.
In 2011, Metcalf mixed and mastered Easybreezy’s album Blowing Up, which helped reconnect him and Leonard. Then Schank and Harper got back in touch, and lo and behold, after years of everyone switching between Tres Bien, Easybreezy, Win Win Winter, Automatic Loveletter and countless other bands (“Woo! Incestuous!” Metcalf says), The Same was back together.
On Saturday, The Same will get back together for a one-off reunion show at the Local 662. The lineup will be Metcalf on guitar and voocals, Leonard on drums, Schanck on bass and Harper on second guitar. (Got all that? 'Cause there will be a quiz.) They’ll be joined by Revere, Gentlemen Please, The Passenger and DJ Colonic. Tickets are $5. Click here for details.
