Artist of the day: Samsoul

's single, In My Dreams begins with a swirling synthesizer, then melts into a hip-hop slow jam with intricate harmonies in the chorus, then fades out in a mist of cricketlike whispers. It's a good introduction to an artist who brings a slew of styles to his mixtapes and album, I'm Ballin.

"Even though I'm a rapper first, I can sign you a soulful ballad or break it down to a tropical salsa song," said Samsoul, a.k.a. Samuel Ruiz. "Lets put it like this: If you put a littlebit of Marc Anthony, and mix it with a little Tupac, a little KRS-One, and throw in a littlebit of Teddy Pendergrass and mix it up in a pot, you'll get sence of what my style is all about."

Samsoul moved to St. Pete at age 13, and, inspired by artists like Michael Jackson and Run-DMC, has been signing and rapping (in both English and Spanish) ever since.

Over the years, Samsoul has performed at events like the Caribbean Festival at Vinoy Park in St. Pete and the Blue and White Party at the Seminole Hard Rock. (Click here to book him.)

He'll also be performing Friday at Ferg's in St. Petersburg, promoting his new single, Down Girl, produced by Strizzo.
