Artist of the day: Shakemode
One reason you can never underestimate a Battle of the Bands concert: Shakemode.
The band only formed in February, but this summer, they blew the judges away during a Battle of the Bands contest at the Ritz Ybor with an energetic cover of Prince's 1999. They reached the finals, and even though they didn't win, they came away with plenty of fans, leading to gigs at Jannus Live, Crowbar and other prominent venues.
Singer-guitarist James Pannofino, drummer Tom Plehn and bassist Lewis Meyer play an energetic blend of rock, ska, punk and reggae -- imagine Fall Out Boy covering Sublime, or Panic at the Disco doing the Mighty Mighty Bosstones -- that's a cut above much of the beach-rock you might expect to find in this area.
Check them out on Wednesday, when they perform at Paddy Burke's in downtown St. Pete starting at 9 p.m. Click here for details.
Then, on Sunday, several top contenders in the Ritz contest, including 10th Concession and Mighty Mongo, will participate in a fundraiser for Tampa hair stylist Spyros Konofaos at Crowbar. Tickets are $5. Click here for the details.
