Artist of the day: Sound Express

Orlando Calling might be the biggest new music festival in Florida, but organizers aren’t overlooking the little guys. There are plenty of talented Orlando groups lined up to perform Saturday and Sunday at the Citrus Bowl. We’re spotlighting a few of them all week. Today: Sound Express.

Sound Express were one of the final bands added to the Orlando Calling bill, having performed well enough in a recent “Hometown Hero” band battle that they’ll be opening up Stage 4 on Sunday.

The group — singer-guitarist Henry Black, guitarist Chris Robinson, bassist James Killgallon and drummer Anthony Manzo — play loose, shaggy rock 'n’ roll that has a polished sound but doesn’t lose the garage-rock feel. With a sound that calls to mind Cage the Elephant or a more grungified Black Keys, they’ve opened for the likes of Buckethead, Paper Tongues and Hot Chelle Rae.
