Artist of the day: The Standback Band
Like the Lee Boys and Black Keys, the Standback Band wants to bring bluesy juke-joint garage rock to your earbuds.
Vocalist Joel Tatangelo has a Jack White-ish vocal sneer that gives a dirty edge to Muddy Waters On My Mind, and his guitar sounds drunk on its own rusty moonshine. Tom Mignella (saxophone and percussion), Adam Mann (drums) and Dustin Pogen (bass) round out the group.
This weekend, the Standback Band will release their new self-titled album with a concert at 9 p.m. Saturday at New World Brewery. November Foxtrot Whiskey and DJ Mini Horse (a.k.a. Matt E. Lee) are also on the bill. Tickets are $6.
Local music folk might recognize one contributor to the new CD: Joel's brother Wade Tatangelo, the former Creative Loafing music critic and occasional Soundcheck contributor. He co-wrote six of the album's seven songs.
