Artist of the day: Static Grooves

Electronic-jazz-fusion combo Static Grooves mix house and turntablism with real-live music (i.e., a trombone). It's a combo the band calls "Electronic: All Grown Up."

"Our sound is just sexy is all its various forms," said Jason "Thee Joker" Filippini, who handles beats and turntables. "Housey, break-beat, drum and bass, downtempo, acid jazz. We use the tagline 'Electronic: All Grown Up' because we all came through the scene and are still here because of the music. Not the drugs, not the VIP. We take electronic sounds and present it in an organic way."

The trio -- who also include by John "Redvoid" Sexton on beats and trombone and Glen "DJ Q" Carter on beats and samples -- have a regular Saturday night gig at BackStage at the Improv, a new late-night music venture attached to the comedy club in Centro Ybor. This Saturday (9/5), they'll be performing again at 11:30 p.m. (after comic Ted Alexandro). Cost is $5.
