Richard Thompson is one of the greatest guitarists of all time, so it’s fitting that he’d pick a Tampa Bay legend for his opening act on Friday at the Tampa Theatre.

Steve Robinson sang and played guitar for the Headlights, a popular Tampa Bay alterna-folk band in the ’80s that also featured guitarist (and current local super-producer) Steve Connelly on guitar. So popular were the Headlights that the Byrds’ Roger McGuinn picked them to tour as his backing band. They even played on The Tonight Show.

Robinson has recorded a handful of solo albums, including 2005’s Away For The Day and 2007’s Undercurrent. In November, he released an EP called The Ride of Our Lives that is chock full of “wistful imagery from his formative years in northern England.” Crystal-clear guitars, strings and mandolins. All of Robinson’s works would appeal to fans of Neil Finn and Crowded House, or Ron Sexsmith.

Robinson, Ed Woltil, Taras Prodaniuk and Michael Jerome will open for Thompson at 8 p.m. at the Tampa Theatre, 711 N Franklin St., Tampa. Tickets are $26-$46. For details, click here.
