Artist of the day: Stria

Last year, a young local band called Not Tonight Josephine broke out around Central Florida with polished, catchy riffs that sounded like they'd fit right in on modern rock radio.

Could Stria be this year's breakthrough band?

The Christian alt-rock group out of St. Petersburg dishes out an unabashedly mainstream sound that calls to mind Skillet, Breaking Benjamin or Hawthorne Heights. Singer Daniel Chapman, bassist Justin Janetzko and drummer Douglas Apolinario formed the band, and new guitarist Dan Sneigoski fleshes things out with heavy, crunching chords.

The band is eager to discuss their faith, even giving away free Bibles at their shows. But their goal at the moment is building a strong following throughout Tampa Bay. "I can promise you that we would impress you in a live show," Chapman said. "We are very blessed and love what we do!"

Check them out Saturday at the Rock Solid Pressure Industry Showcase at the State Theatre. Doors open at 1 p.m., and Stria is tentatively scheduled to perform at 2 p.m. Tickets are $13. Click here for details.
