Artist of the day: Success Will Write Apocalypse Across The Sky

(This week, in celebration of Metallica's concert Saturday at the St. Pete Times Forum, we're taking a look at some of Tampa Bay's top metal bands. Up first: Success Will Write Apocalypse Across The Sky.)

The grindcore sextet known as Success Will Write Apocalypse Across The Sky carpet-bombs listeners with a wicked aural assault bristling with battleaxe guitars and guttural, banshee vocals.

Singer/growler John Collett, guitarist/vocalist Ian Sturgill, guitarist Aaron Haines, drummer J.R. Daniels, bassist Matt Simpson and sampler Jen Muse have broken worldwide in recent years. They toured Europe in support of their May album The Grand Partition and the Abrogation of Idolatry, and they're gearing up for a six-week tour of the United States and Canada in November and December.

SWWAATS, as they're known for short, are more of an intellectual band than you might think, too. Their lyrics, which deal with issues like human rights and changing societies, are almost as heady as that mouthful of a name, which Sturgill told was inspired by a William S. Burroughs piece called Apocalypse.
