Artist of the day: SUNBEARS!
Is this becoming a Thanksgiving tradition? If so, we’re down with it.
On Thanksgiving Day 2009, Jacksonville’s SUNBEARS! performed with Gil Mantera’s Party Dream at Crowbar. This year, SUNBEARS! are back on the day before Thanksgiving, which this year falls on (wait for it) a Wednesday.
It’s a welcome way to celebrate the holiday. The splashy duo — singer/multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Berlin and drummer Jared Bowser — is well known to Tampa audiences for their frequent multisensory performances around town. Signed to Tampa’s New Granada Records, the band produces outsized, euphoric rock in the vein of Flaming Lips or even a synthier Matt and Kim. Their energetic sound has won them fans around the country, and last month, they performed with Yo Gabba Gabba at the St. Pete Times Forum.
Like Yo Gabba Gabba, SUNBEARS! have a sound that screams color. So it was a natural fit when producers hired the group to write a song for the show. “I just started music that puts a smile on my face,” Berlin told Alternative Press. “I love to laugh and I’d lost that somewhere along the way. But I’ve got it back.”
This week’s show is scheduled for 9 p.m. Wednesday at New World Brewery. Click here for details.
