Artist of the day: Suns and Soul
Sons and Soul are three guys (singer-guitarist Tim Hutchinson, bassist Michael Marino and drummer Tony Rook) who call their music "heavy soul." On their 2011 album Burn, they display a rich sound that crisscrosses the Southern-rock spectrum, thanks in no small part to Hutchinson's soulful, raspy vocals.
The Black Crowes are an obvious influence, but the band stretches beyond the South on reggae-influenced songs like The Rain and organ-driven Chicago blues jams like Maybe Someday. Songs like Sky and Man Out Of You even have a John Mayer-ish pop-rock sound.
Sons and Soul will perform at this week's installment of Rock The Park, which starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Curtis Hixon Park in downtown Tampa. Also on the bill are Set and Setting, Al Torchia and the Tattered Saints, and Folly Dean. The show is free. Click here for details.
