Artist of the day: The Trop Rock Junkies
Florida has no shortage of Buffettesque beach-rockers. Seven of them have come together to form the Trop Rock Junkies, a Caribbean-leaning outfit with members from around the globe.
Steve Tolliver and Collin Ward (guitar and vocals), Greg Sabol (bass), Doug Wilcox (keys), Mark Sweat (drums), Lightning Jack McGivern (steel pans) and Tim Poole (guitar/harmonica) play gigs both solo and together as the Trop Rock Junkies. They came together in 2009 when Tolliver, formerly a touring musician in Australia who now lives in Clearwater, needed a band to play live gigs. Turns out the rest of them have their own music cred (Wilcox, for example, is a classically trained pianist). So in 2010, they recorded a live CD, Trop Rock Junkies — Live at the Hideaway Cafe.
This weekend, you’ve got three chances to see them: On Friday night at the Sunset Grill in St. Petersburg; on Saturday at 3:15 at Ribfest in St. Petersburg; and on Sunday at the Veterans Boat Show in Safety Harbor. Click here for more info about these and other upcoming gigs.
