Artist of the day: Uncle John's Band
Who said Jerry Garcia was dead? Not the Grateful Dead tribute act Uncle John's Band, which has held a Thursday night residency at the Skipperdome for a dozen years.
The group formed in Clearwater in 1990, and they play six to 10 gigs a month, including every Thursday at Skipper's. The musicians sometimes rotate (Steve Connelly has been performing with them lately, but members have included): lead guitarist/vocalist Alan Gilman, bassist/lead vocalist Mike Edwards, percussionist Jamie Lavecchia, keyboardist Art Nelson, rhythm guitarist/vocalist Rich Whiteley, lead guitarist John Zias and drummer Dan DeGregory. They've played more than 500 shows over the years -- not quite at Jerry's level, but they're getting there.
You can check out Uncle John's Band on Thursday (obviously) starting at 8 p.m. at Skipper's Smokehouse in Tampa. There's a $7 cover ... but you can't put a price on love, man. Click here.
