Artist of the day: underTone
Tampa's underTone mixes sludgy guitars and wailing vocals with a grunge-meets-metal edge. On hard-hitting songs like Family Tree and Leech, it's a mix that calls to mind Scott Weiland fronting Korn or Tool.
"One of the best compliments we’ve received recently came from an independent radio station who said that they hear our influences in our music, yet we don’t sound like these bands," said guitarist Mike Weaver. "Between the four of us, we have a very broad range of influences." Among them: Sevendust, Helmet, System of a Down and Faith No More.
Three of the members -- Weaver, bassist Adam DePiro and singer Roger Thompson -- have been performing together around Tampa Bay since 2001. Rob Taylor signed on when the band's previous drummer moved away. Weaver says he hopes 2010 is the year underTone takes over Tampa.
"Luckily, we're now all in a position to take undertone to the next level -- i.e., we're ready to leave corporate America and become big rock stars," he said.
