Artist of the day: Valerie Gillespie
Pennsylvania native Valerie Gillespie does a little bit of everything -- sax, vocals, flute, clarinet and more. She has been teaching local kids how to play saxophone for years, both private lessons and as part of the music faculty at the University of South Florida in Tampa. For two decades, the Florida Orchestra has called on her occasionally when in need of a sax player. She's toured the world with the Xaviar Cugat Orchestra and played with artists like Rosemary Clooney, Ray Charles and Steve Allen.
This Friday and Saturday (Feb. 17-18), you can find Gillespie at one of her usual haunts: Della's After Dark in Brandon. She'll perform there from 7 to 10 p.m. Click here for her full local performance schedule.
