Artist of the day: Variance
New Port Richey alternative group Variance -- Brent Halenkamp (vocals, guitar), Ali Ahmed (bass), David Kosinski (drums) and Adonijah Stevens (guitar) -- has made the most of its six years on the Tampa rock scene, scoring gigs opening for the likes of Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Hawthorne Heights, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, Story of the Year and more.
Their music is modern rock with unique melodic touches. New single Leaving links melodic piano riffs with jackknife guitars and a blazing chorus -- it's a little like Linkin Park. Thin Red Line is a catchy rock track with almost flamenco-like acoustic guitar. And Innocent is a straight-ahead blast of rage, a la Hawthorne Heights. Their first EP, Sing A Little Louder, is available today.
In addition to the bands listed above, Variance has also opened for Framing Hanley -- and they'll do so again this weekend. The groups will perform at 6 p.m. Friday at the State Theatre in St. Petersburg, alongside State Your Cause, 3 Pill Morning, Sunshine and Bullets and more. Tickets are $15. Click here for details.
