Artist of the day: Vega Under Fire
Naples pop-punk fivesome Vega Under Fire were the grand prize winners of this year's 97X Next Big Thing local band search, which means they'll get to share the stage with Panic at the Disco, the Used, 30 Seconds to Mars and more on Sunday at the Ford Amphitheatre. (Click here for the Next Big Thing lineup and details.)
It'll be the second time in 2009 that the band -- singer Brian Blount, guitarist Brad Shellito, bassist Jason Giardina, synthman Ryan Birmingham and drummer Aaron Maloney -- has shared a stage with Panic at the Disco, which should tell you how well regarded they are among Florida pop-punk fans.
When we saw Vega Under Fire play with their friends Select Start this summer at Tampa's Club Fuze, we called them "a ridiculously catchy quintet that tempered their disco-tinged, Fall Out Boyish pop-punk with elements of pop and rock that oscillated somewhere between Fountains of Wayne and Foo Fighters." They closed with a rather awesome cover of George Michael's Careless Whisper; expect them to break that bad boy out at Next Big Thing, too.
