Viernes

They've opened for the likes of Deerhunter, Vetiver and St. Petersburg's own Blind Man's Colour, and they played Harvest of Hope in March. More and more people seem to be responding to their weirdly ambient noise-pop. Pitchfork praised the "gorgeous peal of shimmering electronics" of their song Swimmer's Ear. And they just graced the cover of Orlando Weekly.

In short: It's a good time to be Viernes.

Like Blind Man's Colour (and West Palm Beach's Surfer Blood), the Orlando indie-shoegaze duo -- Sean Moore and Alberto Hernandez -- have signed to Brooklyn's Kanine Records, home to Grizzly Bear and Chairlift, among others. They recently released their debut LP, Sinister Devices,

We caught them at New World Brewery last summer, when they played at Blind Man's Colour's first official hometown show. Here's what we wrote then:

The Deerhunter comparison is a good place to start, though their fuzzy, droning sound structures also reminded me a little of My Bloody Valentine and, yet again, Animal Collective. For me, Viernes' best songs were the ones that were more percussive and driving, like Regressive Soul Pollution. If it had a beat, and you could bounce to it, it was pretty good.

On Saturday, Viernes will celebrate the release of Sinister Devices with a show at Crowbar alognside Blind Man's Colour and Young Egypt. The show is at 9 p.m.; tickets are $7. Click here.
