Artist of the day: A View From The East Coast

Sure, we're on the west coast of Florida. But Florida is on the East Coast of the United States. So the band name A View From The East Coast sort of fits.

The group changed shape about six months ago, when brothers Bryan (vocals/guitars) and Stephen (vocals) Ellrod parted ways with several original members and brought on guitarist Matt Badillo, drummer Tyler Gilbert and bassist Mike Garcia. They've been very active since then, performing at venues around town and continuing to polish their soaring pop-punk sound, which is not dissimilar from that of another notable Tampa Bay band: We The Kings. Check out their latest EP, Meraki, for a sampling of their sound.

"We'd call ourselves melodic pop rock," said Bryan Ellrod. "We draw influences from a lot of different places, from bands like Mayday Parade and Taking Back Sunday to Envy on the Coast and more hardcore acts. Each member brings a bit of a different musical listening background to the writing table."

Even though four of the five members are in collage -- Stephen Ellrod and Garcia go to Florida Southern, Gilbert goes to the University of Tampa and Badillo goes to Hillsborough Community College -- they play around town as often as they can. "We are currently looking into going back on tour in the winter and will definitely be putting together another summer tour when that time rolls around," said Bryan Ellrod.

The band has two shows in the next week. On Friday, look for them at Transitions Art Gallery at the Skatepark of Tampa alongside The Lion Faced Boy, The Wanderer and A Play On Words. Tickets are $7; click here for details. Then on Sept. 30, they'll perform at the State Theatre at a CD release party for Variance, along with Goodnight Neverland and others. Tickets are $10.
