Y Los Dos Pistoles
plays moody folk rock, too earthy to be punk but too out-there to be Americana. It’s in a mysterious in-between place, conveyed through a subtle country-tinged style that doesn’t invoke the cliched ritual of drowning sorrows in a whiskey bottle. It’s more about the dreams that follow.

The Pistoles formed in 2008 in Tampa, with Shae Krispinsky on vocals, guitar and harmonica; Derek Forrester, drums; and Russ Jovin, bass. Keyboardist Dan Padilla, a hilariously low-key and well-liked musician around Tampa’s punk scene (so much so, a band was named after him) joined this spring, playing what he wryly calls a “portable piano” — a laptop and small keyboard. “High-tech, all the way,” Padilla said with a laugh.

Well, shoot: Y Los Dos Pistoles plays moody folk rock, too earthy to be punk but too out-there to be Americana. It’s in a mysterious in-between place, conveyed through a subtle country-tinged style that doesn’t invoke the cliched ritual of drowning sorrows in a whiskey bottle. It’s more about the dreams that follow.

The way of the guns: The Pistoles formed in 2008 in Tampa, with Shae Krispinsky on vocals, guitar and harmonica; Derek Forrester, drums; and Russ Jovin, bass.

Outside their comfort zone: Forrester and Jovin also play in the punk band Regular-Size People Fight, and for all three guys in the band, the mellower style of their Pistoles project presents a whole new, learning experience. “I’ve always played in punk rock or metal bands,” Padilla said. “But I’ve listened to all kinds of music, so to be able to play in a band that’s similar to things I’ve listened to but never been able to play is pretty rad. It’s daunting, too.”

Recordings: They give out a three-song EP recorded at Atomic Audio, tunes that can be heard on their MySpace page (myspace.com/ylosdospistoles), and plan to record a full-length by the end of the year.
¡Ay! ¡Que band name! Their time spent as a threesome partially explains it. Forrester said the sloppy Spanish translation of “and the two guns” implies the two hired guns (Forrester and Jovin) that back up the singer. He also said the name comes from the Mexican-bandit-two-gun salute his mom gestures after winning a card game.

What brought them together: Krispinsky lived in Hermitage, Pa., before moving to Tampa in 2007. She had a long-distance relationship with Forrester for the past 6 years and decided to close the gap and move in with him. Before Krispinsky moved to Tampa, she and Forrester had been sending music tracks back and forth and started recording demos, songs that would eventually become Pistoles tracks. She tried out some of her songs doing open mics at Sacred Grounds, solo and with Forrester. The couple now lives with Jovin and Jeff Brawer of the Dukes of Hillsborough in a house in Southeast Seminole Heights. They have a “guard cat” named Jobie, whose picture appears in the front window with the warning, “Bewarez!”

Fresh talent: Y Los Dos Pistoles is Krispinksy’s first band. “It took me a long time to be able to sing in front of people.” Asked if she still gets stage fright, she gives a definitive yes. Says Jovin, “We try to get her to do a shot before we play to calm her nerves down.”

Hear them: 7 p.m. Thursday (7/22), with Just Satellites, The Sparta Philharmonic and Stay Golden at Fubar, 658 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. (727) 821-7080.
