Bo Burnham coming to Clearwater's Capitol Theatre

The Capitol Theatre has hosted some pretty interesting shows over the past year and a half -- Paula Cole, Brandi Carlile, Henry Rollins, Richard Marx this Thursday -- but this might be one of the venue's most interesting "gets."

Bo Burnham, the 19-year-old Massachusetts singer-comic who rocketed to Internet stardom with a series of videos like New Math, above, will make his Tampa Bay debut at the Capitol Theatre on May 7. Burnham is wicked popular with the college crowd, and we've been wondering when he'd make his way to Tampa Bay, and where he'd play when he got here. (Our bet would have been USF.) For the Capitol to get him is a nice coup.

Burnham's schtick is jaunty little comedic songs that blend pop, rock, hip-hop and a combination of clever wordplay and darkly sexual references that play off his preppy suburban look. It's a mixture of puns and ironic offensiveness that is bound to annoy some people, but it hasn't stopped him from attracting some 50-million-plus views on his YouTube videos, or from selling out shows around the country, or from landing his own Comedy Central special, or from getting name-dropped in the pages of Entertainment Weekly and Rolling Stone, or from signing a movie deal with Judd Apatow.

Tickets are $29.50-$35, and they go onsale Friday at noon. Click here or call Ruth Eckerd Hall at (727) 791-7400 for details.
