The Brass Mug, Tampa's iconic metal club, moving to new location

The Brass Mug: It is a rite of passage for many a metal fan in Tampa, a dark, dank black box of a bar that has hosted some of the gnarliest punk and metal performances the area has ever had to offer.

Green Day played there before they got huge. So did No Doubt. And then there were bands like Fear, Death Angel, the Ataris, the Cro-Mags, Tesco Vee and the Meatmen, and countless members of Tampa metal stalwarts Obituary, Deicide, Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse.

“It’s the CBGB of Tampa,” one local musician told the St. Pete Times in 2000.

This week, though, the Brass Mug, the club that has long billed itself as "Tampa Bay's music core," is moving.

The Mug is leaving its longtime home at 1441 E Fletcher Ave. to a new location at 14811 N Florida Ave. in Tampa, in a space that was formerly the Silver Fox Sports Bar & Grille. On Thursday, as she was rushing to get the new location ready for its first concerts, owner Heather Mullis said it was just time for a change, but did not elaborate.

It’s a pretty surprising development, considering the venue’s history. Since opening in 1982, it has become a landmark in the La Place shopping center on Fletcher Avenue, near the University of South Florida. In 2009, tbt* ranked it No. 88 on the list of Tampa Bay’s best bars; that same summer, we saw an absolutely lights-out performance there by Light Yourself on Fire (above) and Wetnurse.

The first show in the new Mug is Friday: Jucifer, After Death, Sumo and Servants of the Mist, starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10. Click here for details. Other noteworthy upcoming shows include D.R.I. on March 2 and Sabaton on April 10. The new location is pretty bare-bones at the moment, but Mullis said it would be ready for music by Friday. Check out some photos after the jump.

Readers, tell us: What's your favorite memory of the Mug?
