Catch it this weekend: 'Jails, Hospitals and Hip-Hop' in Ybor City
Tampa actor Curtis Belz stars in Jails, Hospitals and Hip-Hop, a one-man show by Def Poetry Jam veteran Danny Hoch that puts a hip-hop spin on the performance art/theater tradition of Eric Bogosian and Lily Tomlin.
Belz portrays characters ranging from a prison guard with anger-management issues to a white teenager practicing in front of his mirror to be a “gangsta’’ rapper. Directed by Christopher Rutherford, the production includes music by Matt Wetherington and hip-hop choreography by DeMario Henry, whose VYB Dance Company is the opening act.
There are performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Hillsborough Community College Ybor Mainstage Theater, Palm Avenue and 15th Street, Tampa. $10, $5. (813) 253-7695.
