Duncan Sheik coming to the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center
"What?" you might be wondering. "The Barely Breathing guy? Why is that big news?"
Glad you asked. Duncan Sheik co-wrote the music and score for Spring Awakening, the racy Broadway smash that won eight Tony Awards in 2007, including Best Musical. Sheik won two Tonys, Best Orchestrations and Best Original Score, as well as a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album.
Sheik will be performing music from Spring Awakening, as well as his new CD Whisper House, when he comes to the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center's Ferguson Hall on March 26, 2010.
Yeah, that's a long way off, we know. No ticket info is available yet, but when TBPAC officially unveils its next full season in the next few weeks, we should hear something.
And yes, Sheik is also the Barely Breathing guy, as well as the Wishful Thinking guy and the She Runs Away guy. All are decent pop songs, even if they're not as in-your-face as Awakening's The Bitch of Living or Totally F---ed.
John Fleming chatted with Sheik when Spring Awakening came to TBPAC last December. At the time, the Spring Awakening soundtrack had sold close to 200,000 copies.
"Granted, the people in the show use the f-word a lot," Sheik said then, "but where in the culture don't you hear that? I think that people who would have a problem with the way sexuality is evoked in Spring Awakening are people who really have pretty deep problems with their own sexuality."
Should be an intriguing show.
