Explosions in the Sky coming to the Ritz Ybor in Tampa
I've interviewed enough bands in my life to know that if an alternative/indie band plays sparse, guitar-driven songs with no lead singer, it is inevitable that someone, at some point, will bring up the band Explosions in the Sky. Heck, we just did it the other day.
Comparing bands to Explosions in the Sky has rapidly become one of the biggest cliches in music writing, like saying a singer's voice is "haunting" or a band's guitars are "jangly" or comparing anyone to the Beatles or Bob Dylan.
But that's just how unique and powerful Explosions in the Sky have become. Their sound -- forever linked to the film Friday Night Lights (and the TV show, too, though the score for that one was done by a sound-alike) -- is so striking and soaring that, well, there's just no other band out there like 'em. They're the benchmark for this type of music.
So it'll be quite interesting to see which local bands come out of the woodwork when Explosions in the Sky come to the Ritz Ybor on June 19. Tickets to see the acclaimed Texans will go onsale at noon May 5 for $20-$25. Click here for details.
And hey, help us out here: Who do YOU think Explosions in the Sky sound like? (And c'mon, don't say Sigur Ros.)
