Flaming Lips coming to Jannus Live

When we heard a few weeks ago that Jannus Live was trying to book the Flaming Lips as one of the first major headliners at the new St. Petersburg venue, our reaction was: Wow ... but ... really?

The Lips rocked the old Jannus Landing a few years ago, and it was one of the best shows in the history of Jannus Landing (click here for a photo gallery from that show). But they're performing May 13 in Orlando, and it didn't look likely that they would bother to arrange a last-minute stop in St. Pete, too.

But today we're getting the official word that -- saints be praised! -- the Flaming Lips will mark their triumphant return to Jannus with a gig on May 12. (Looks like Wayne was listening!) Tickets are $37.50 advance, $40 day of show, and they went onsale at 5 p.m. Monday. Click here to order via Ticketmaster.

We covered that 2007 show, and it was mesmerizing. And the Lips will be performing at Jannus Live the same week as the physical release of their cover of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. It's also taking place about one month before the Lips head to Bonnaroo as a headliner. So this is a can't-miss show. (Although it appears it's the same night as Minus the Bear at the Ritz Ybor -- oh noes, what's a hipster to do?!)

To recap, here's Jannus Live's concert schedule for the coming weeks:

April 24: Rusted Root (free show)

April 30: John Hiatt

May 7: Lisa Lisa and Rob Base

May 12: Flaming Lips

According to posters at the Pelican Pub, reggae stars Barrington Levy and Beres Hammond are both coming to Jannus Live later this summer, too. In all .. the lineup they've got going at the moment sounds sort of like the lineups at the old Jannus Landing, doesn't it?
