Gavin DeGraw saves the best for last
Gavin DeGraw seems like the kind of guy who eats all his veggies before tackling dessert. The 32-year-old took delayed gratification to the extreme before a packed house at St. Petersburg's State Theatre on Friday. After opening country-folk act HoneyHoney, the eclectic musician kicked off his set with four songs from his new album, Free.
As this was the last concert of DeGraw's two-month tour, he seemed to want to go out with a bang, and so he drew out the concert for almost two hours: 13 songs of his original set, an encore of five songs and second encore of his two biggest hits, I'm in Love with a Girl, on which S eminole native Billy Norris rocked the house with an electric guitar solo, and I Don't Want to Be, which DeGraw described as "the song that changed my life and paid for all my college loans."
To many fans' pleasure, DeGraw appeared very clean-cut compared to the scruffy image on the cover of his 2003 CD, Chariot. His clean- shaven face stood out, as did his stylish new haircut.
