Gospel icon Mahalia Jackson comes to life at Studio@620
Sharon Scott grew up hearing the songs of Mahalia Jackson (I Will Move On Up a Little Higher; Didn’t It Rain; Take My Hand, Precious Lord) on the radio and records.
Scott, a popular singer and actor in Tampa Bay, ended up writing a play about Jackson. Mahalia, Just As I Am, Scott’s show about Jackson, opens this week at the Studio@620 in St. Petersburg.
Scott, with pianist Ozanda Gray, will perform Jackson’s hits and tell her story. The show features Scott performing 22 Jackson favorites, from Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho to This Little Light of Mine, songs tailor-made for her bluesy style.
“Mahalia was more than a singer,’’ Scott says. “She had great influence in the community politically. She was a grand friend of Martin Luther King Jr.’’
Mahalia, Just As I Am opens Friday and runs through Oct. 25 at the Studio@620, 620 First Ave. S, St. Petersburg. Preview tonight. $15-$25. (727) 895-6620; studio620.org.
