How did the Honey Pot in Ybor City become a mecca for drag competitions?

The Honey Pot has -- and still does -- welcome bands and artists to its stage. Lil Jon has performed there. So has Ashlee Simpson and Kim Zolciak. And in April, so will Mount Kimbie.

But these days, the Honey Pot's claim to fame is that it is now one of the top spots for national-quality drag competitions ... anywhere.

"We are very quickly becoming regarded around the nation as a home for the best drag talent in the country,'' said D. Stephen Moss, a Honey Pot co-owner who also owns G.Bar and the Ybor City Social Club.

"The venue is perfect,'' said Michael Dixon, a.k.a. Daphne Ferraro, who has hosted the Evolution of Drag theatrical shows at the club. "I've looked at other venues in the area and there is a lot of nonsense. They aren't as easy to deal with.''

On Sunday, the Miss Gay Florida USofA Newcomer 2011 pageant, with reigning drag champs Alisa Summers and Phalon Steele, starts will take place at the Honey Pot. Admission is $20 at the door. For info, click here.
