Idina Menzel talks about her iconic 'Rent' and 'Wicked' roles, recording with Marvin Hamlisch and returning to Broadway

Idina Menzel will sing a few pop hits when she performs at Tampa's Straz Center for the Performing Arts on Satrday. She covers the Police's Roxanne, Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now and Lady Gaga's Poker Face, which she did as an acoustic duet with Lea Michele on Glee. She also sings a few originals.

But of course she'll dip into her Broadway songbook to perform numbers from her most iconic roles: The performance artist Maureen from Rent and Elphaba the witch from Wicked.

“Believe me, I don’t take that lightly,” she said in a recent interview. “To have struck gold twice with Rent and Wicked. I know it’s rare and I’m very lucky to have that kind of phenomenon in my life. They’re not just great shows, they’re shows that resonate with young audiences.”

Menzel performs at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Straz Center. Tickets start at $39.50. Click here for details.
