Bikini girls! Dune buggies! Daredevil surfers! Ordinarily, Treasure Island's beaches would be swarming with 'em. But not Nov. 22, oh, no. They'll all be cleared out to make way for painstaking sand preparation!

Okay, fine, it may not be the Grand Nationals of Sand Castle Building, but there WILL be a major sand castle competition, dubbed "Sanding Ovations," Nov. 22 at the Bilmar Beach Resort in Treasure Island.

"Why are you telling us this HERE," you are no doubt asking, "and not on tbt*'s sand-castle-building blog?"

For one, our sand-castle-building blog is down for maintenance. For two, there IS a musical component to this event. As the master sculptors (maybe Mark Rodkin?) do their thing, there will be a giant jam session, starting at noon on Nov. 22, and lasting until sunset, right on the beach.

The best part? According to the press release, any musician who participates in the jam will be treated to free burgers, dogs and some frothy adult beverages, too." When you bait musicians with free froth, just watch 'em come running. If you're interested in playing in the jam, contact Pete Gallagher at pgallag2@tampabay.rr.com.

There will be a lot of quality music at Bilmar all weekend, from Greg Billings and Cornfused on Nov. 20 night to Experimental Pilot, Sarasota Slim and Rus "Rocket Man" Anderson on Nov. 21. (Our only question: How could they not book Robin Sparkles?)

There's also food, vendor tents, games and more. Parking will be $10 at 112th Avenue and Gulf Boulevard.
