John Oliver, Mike Epps coming to the Straz Center in Tampa
From a comedy standpoint, last October was pretty huge for the Straz Center, which booked Daniel Tosh and Chelsea Handler a week apart.
This October is looking pretty smooth, too. The Straz on Wednesday announced The Daily Show's John Oliver would be coming to Tampa at 8 p.m. Oct. 21. This is a great get, not only because Oliver is wildly intelligent and funny, but because he's more than just a television talking head. He's a veteran stand-up who cares deeply about the craft, as you can tell from his Comedy Central program John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show, which has featured a who's who of cool comics like Maria Bamford, Eugene Mirman, Nick Kroll and Hannibal Buress.
Tickets to Oliver's show start at $34.50, and they go onsale Friday at noon. Click here for details.
Also announced today by the Straz was a show on Oct. 28 by comedian Mike Epps, who has achieved cinematic immortality as "Black Doug" from The Hangover. He has of course appeared in many more films than that, such as Next Friday, Lottery Ticket and The Fighting Temptations, but it's The Hangover we'll always remember.
Epps actually came to the Mahaffey Theatre a couple of years ago. Tbt* interviewed him then, and found him to be, um, somewhat less than scintillating, conversationally speaking. But hey, maybe he was tired.
Epps will perform at 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Straz Center. Tickets start at $39.50. Click here for details.
