Labor Day fun: Paradiso Girls, Jim Jones, Vanilla Ice and the Beach Boys
Whenever any major holiday draws near — Memorial Day, New Year’s, Arbor Day — you can count on several of Tampa Bay's nightclubs to throw big-time, celebrity-laden parties. Because, you know, many of us prefer to show respect for our nation’s traditions by chugging Red Bull and Ciroc.
Well, Labor Day is no different. And this year, some Tampa Bay hotspots are stretching the holiday weekend into a five-day affair, with Labor Day parties starting as early as Thursday night. Here's a roundup of some of the musical headliners at local Labor Day club parties:
-- AJA Channelside: This Tampa club will feature a performance by the Paradiso Girls, above on Thursday night; tickets are $10. (Don't expect them to perform much more than their hit Patron Tequila.) On Friday, DJ Scene, a resident at Studio 54 and Wet Republic in Las Vegas, will take the decks. Tha Mixfits will spin on Saturday. And on Sunday, That '70s Show's Wilmer Valderrama swings by to host a Labor Day party. Click here for details.
-- Shephard's Beach Resort: The waterfront club's "Old Skool Weekend" will be bangin' all weekend, but never more so than on Sunday night, when Vanilla Ice (!) and Rob Base (!!) will come in for a concert that'll have you reaching for your finest hypercolor snap bracelet. Admission to Shephard's is $10 all weekend, but the concert is $15. Get details here.
-- Club Skye: In addition to hosting pre- and post-parties for Saturday's Lil Wayne concert (beware, Weezy, Soulja Boy and the rest are only being called "invited guests"), Skye is touting an appearance by Jim Jones Thursday night, during Big Cheese's birthday bash. And on Sunday, there's a "Reggaeton vs. Hip Hop Party" featuring Don Chezina.
-- Czar: In addition to the usual Filthy Richard party on Friday night, the annual multimedia extravaganza known as Sweatshop is scheduled for Sunday night, with fashion, art and music by the Vera Violets, In Fireworks, DJ Mega, DJ Noi and Curse Mackey. Click here for details.
Finally, don't forget the Beach Boys (or what's left of them, anyway) will be performing a free postgame concert at Tropicana Field Saturday night, following the Rays vs. Rangers at 7:08 p.m. Technically not a Labor Day Party, since it's classified as "Beach Night," but eh, same diff.
